This year’s Gay Head 10K road race is dedicated to Len Butler, “the man who moved the lighthouse”. He took on the massive task of relocating the Gay Head Light so future generations would never lose her constant and comforting presence. Len was an enthusiastic supporter of the race, rain or shine, always on the course to cheer on the runners. We honor his service to the town he loved.

What is the Gay Head 10K?

This 10K (6.2 miles) race is held each year to support the restoration of the recently relocated Gay Head Lighthouse in Aquinnah, MA. Run from under the famed lighthouse’s beam, down State Road through lovely, rolling hills, to Moshup Trail, along the scenic, dune-filled coast, and back to the lighthouse.

Beginning at the Gay Head Cliffs, the course heads down State Road past the Aquinnah Town Hall, the Aquinnah Public Library and Wampanoag Tribal lands, up Moshup Trail along the beaches and crashing surf, and back to the lighthouse. Water stations are located every two miles along the course. Runners may check bags at the race tent located in the Gay Head circle, near the lighthouse.

Skates, scooters, skateboards, regular strollers and animals are prohibited on the course. Jogging strollers are allowed, but double jogging strollers are prohibited. If you choose to run with a single jogging stroller, please start at the rear of the pack. The course will close at 12:00 pm, and traffic will again be allowed on the roads. Timing will also close at 12:00 pm.

And be sure to stick around after you run for the Award Ceremony and our famous After the Race Feast, with delicious food supplied by local Aquinnah merchants! In addition, all runners are invited to tour the lighthouse for free on the day of the race.
